| Feminine titles in ancient Egypt |
| All societies, ancient and modern, have sought to find ways to acknowledge the people who contribute more than most to their community. |

| Queen Nefertiti (the beauty that has come) |
  |
Medals are handed out to soldiers who perform particularly heroic deeds. Pictures and statues of leaders are displayed in public places. One very common method of honoring special people is to give them a title. Countess, duke and duchess would be examples used today in parts of Europe.
Ancient Egypt was a very hierarchical society, and as you might expect, titles were very important. There were three ways by which women could acquire a title: inheritance, marriage and merit. We know that all three of these ways were in operation, but at this point we do not have sufficient evidence to do more than guess which method was used for a specific title or which method a specific woman used to earn her titles.
The highest ranking women at any one time were the King's Mother and the King's Great Wife. Egyptian kings could and did have many wives. All bore the title King's Wife, but it was the Great Wife who took precedence at special ceremonies and it was her son who was first in line to inherit the throne. Occasionally a king, Amunhotep III, for example, is known to have had two Great Wives living at the same time. Whenever they were shown together in the same painting, however, only the senior was shown with the title; the other was then simply called King's Wife. As might be expected, there was considerable prestige attached to the titles of King's Sister and King's Daughter, whether the holder be related to the current king or his predecessor.

New finds at Egypt's
city of dead |
| Archaeologists have been unveiling the latest discoveries from the Saqqara necropolis, or city of the dead, south of Egypt's capital, Cairo. |
| news |
 |
Two tombs dating from between 3,000 and 4,200 years ago are of a royal scribe and a butler.
Another find is of the sarcophagi of a priest and his female companion from the 12th dynasty (1991-1786 BC).
Saqqara holds a number of temples and tombs. Officials say perhaps only 30% of its treasures have been discovered.
Well-preserved
The tomb of the royal scribe dates to the period of the pharaoh Akhenaten, who was known for discarding Egypt's old gods.
His rule was between 1379 and 1362 BC, shortly before Tutankhamen.
Egypt's antiquities chief, Zahi Hawass, said: "It doesn't look great because it was built from mud brick and not built of limestone, but I really believe that this tomb is very important."
The tomb's dark wooden door bears hieroglyphics of the scribe and his wife.

Paper lanterns for
Chinese New Year. |
 |
What you need:
Construction paper, scissors, tape, stapler, ruler, pencil, glue, glitter, sequins, if desired to decorate your lantern
What you do:
Use your ruler to measure and cut 1" off the short end of your paper. Set aside to use as the handle. Fold your paper in half lengthwise.
Draw a line 1" from the end of the long edge of the paper opposite the folded edge. This will be the line where you stop cutting.
Measure and mark lines 1" apart starting at the folded edge and moving towards the "stop cutting" line.
Cut on the marked lines up to the "stop cutting" line.
Unfold the paper.
Re-crease the paper in the opposite direction. This will hide any pencil marks.
Match the long edges together on the lantern and use tape to hold it in place.
Staple the handle to the top of the lantern.
Make as many lanterns as you wish and display them around your home.
If you wish, add glue, glitter, sequins or other things to decorate your lanterns.
