| Belgians find tomb of ancient Egypt courtier |
New Egyptian Tomb |
| news |
 |
|
A Belgian archaeologists have discovered the intact tomb of an Egyptian courtier who lived about 4,000 years ago, Egypt's culture ministry said on Sunday.
The team from Leuven Catholic University accidentally found the tomb, one of the best preserved of its time, while excavating a later burial site at the Deir al-Barsha necropolis near the Nile Valley town of Minya, south of Cairo.
The tomb belonged to Henu, an estate manager and high-ranking official during the first intermediate period, which lasted from 2181 to 2050 BC and was a time of political chaos in ancient Egypt.
The archaeologists found Henu's mummy wrapped in linen in a large wooden coffin and a sarcophagus decorated with hieroglyphic texts addressed to the gods Anubis and Osiris.
The tomb contained well-preserved painted wooden statuettes of workers making bricks, women making beer and pounding cereal, and a model of a boat with rowers, a ministry statement said.
"The statuettes (are of) the best quality of their time. They are characterized by realistic touches and unusual details such as the dirty hands and feet of the brick makers," the statement said, quoting Belgian team leader Harco Willems.
Minya is 225 km (140 miles) south of Cairo.

| Whale Shark sightings in the Red Sea are on the increase! |
| Rhincodon typus |
|
red sea marine life |
 |
|
Since November 2006 two new whale sharks have been formally identified and added to the ECOCEAN Photo Identification Library bringing the count to 6 in the Red Sea.
ECOCEAN is a global data collection programme that uses a special computerized technique to identify the spots on the skin of the Whale Shark similar to how NASA “maps” the stars in the galaxies. The total number of recorded Whale Sharks is less than 3000, with just 772 identified worldwide.
Whale sharks have been sighted in the last few weeks, north around the area of Shabruur Umm Gamar and as far South as Shaab Rumi in Sudan. Several Whale Sharks have also been seen imbetween, in the areas around Marsa Alam and Fury Shoal.
- The Whale Shark, Rhincodon typus dates back to the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods 245 -65 million years ago.
- Whale Sharks are fish and therefore obtain oxygen via their gills.
- Whale Sharks are regarded as highly migratory.
- Whale Sharks have internal fertilization and produce live young. Pups are born at fraction of their adult size – being only approximately 55cm in length at birth, and reaching sexual maturity it is thought at after 30 years.
- The estimated life span of a Whale Shark is between 80 and 150 years.
The whale shark is considered “vulnerable to extinction” by the ICUN, but is only protected in a few of the approximately 100 countries it is said to visit - indicating the need for us all to be concerned for the future of this amazing giant of the oceans!
Find out how you can help protect and learn more about the largest fish in the world by logging on to www.whalesharkproject.org or www.ecocean.org and submit your photos! y. |

| Fancy Flip Flops |
During warm weather months, your children live in their flip flops! Take an ordinary pair and jazz them up with fancy feathers or brightly colored buttons.
|
| parents & kids |
 |
|
Age: 6 and up
Materials:
- Pair of flip flop sandals
- Colorful feathers, an old feather boa, or various colored buttons
- White craft glue.
|
Instructions:
Button flip-flops:
- Using white craft glue, starting in the center of the flip-flop strap, attach buttons, one after another.
- Allow the glue to dry for an hour or two before wearing.
|
Feather flip-flops:
- Start at the bottom of one of the straps and glue feathers in place, one by one, working your way up toward the center. Repeat this process for the other strap, meeting in the center.Fill in any gaps with excess feathers.
- Feathers can be trimmed with scissors as you go, if needed.
- Allow the glue to dry for an hour or two before wearing.
|
Helpful hints
* Flip flops are available at any discount department more, drug store and even in craft stores. Flip flops in craft stores are generally about $2.00 per pair and come in a variety of colors.
* Feathers in a multitude of colors are available in bags from any craft store. You can also find them at discount department stores but the selection is usually not as large.
* We do not recommend hot glue for this project as it comes loose from the plastic too easily. White craft glue will hold better.

| Broccoli Nutrition Facts |

|
Broccoli was developed in Italy and is well established as one of the major anti-cancer foods. Over the past 20 years, numerous studies have concluded again and again that people who eat an abundance of broccoli have fewer cancers of the colon, breast, cervix, lungs, prostate, esophagus, larynx, and bladder. Broccoli contains indoles, which can help inactivate harmful estrogens that can promote the growth of tumors, sulforaphane, which stimulates cells to produce cancer-fighting enzymes, and beta-carotene, another cancer fighter.
Broccoli contains some 3% of protein and is one of the richest vegetable sources of calcium, iron and magnesium. Moreover, broccoli is very rich in vitamins A and C, exceeding even oranges in the concentration of the latter.
Broccoli can be eaten raw in salads or with dips, or it can be steamed and eaten as is, or served with a light nut, or similar sauce
