10 Whale Sharks in the Red Sea! |
Whale Shark Awareness Red Sea Project reports |
| News |
 |
|
The Whale Shark Awareness Red Sea Project in collaboration with Project Aware is collecting information to assist researchers learn more about Whale Sharks. Sightings of the gentle giant cruising through Red Sea waters have been on the increase in the past few months, with 12 Red Sea sightings reported to the project in July alone.
Whale Shark Awareness Red Sea aims to educate divers and snorkelers and encourage them to report their sightings to the Whale Shark Photo Identification website. This enables divers to contribute vital information to researchers studying whale shark migrations and producing the information that is essential for the future protection of these huge, harmless fish.
The Photo Identification Library has formally identified five new Red Sea whale sharks since November 2006. This brings the count to TEN in the Red Sea, the numbers of sightings suggest that there could be more. On 5th August Emperor Divers reported a sighting around the area of Halg Disha in Hurghada.
The 8th Whale Shark officially recorded in the Red Sea was approximately 3.5 metres long and was seen by divers and snorkelers at Ras Ghazlani in Ras Mohammed Marine Park in Sharm on 21st July. Reported to be a very friendly female fish and interested in the people around her it is easy to see why the Whale Shark is threatened to extinction in the wild.
Spotted by lucky liveaboard guests Number 9 was at Shark Reef, Ras Mohammed. The guests were thrilled with their photos and experience especially as they were lucky enough to see two whale sharks during their weeks diving safari. Number 10 was at Shaab Nakari in the south.
The Photo Identification Library uses a special computerized technique to identify the spots on the skin of the Whale Shark similar to how NASA “maps” the stars in the galaxies. You can help by sending in photographs of the left and right side of the Whale Shark above the pectoral fins near the gills. The total number of recorded Whale Shark encounters is just 3853, with only 860* identified worldwide!
The Whale Shark Awareness Red Sea - Project Aware T shirts are on sale now at participating dive centres in El Gouna, Hurghada, Marsa Alam and on board several safari boats. Proceeds go towards awareness, global research and conservation.
Have you seen a Whale Shark in the Red Sea? Want to learn more? Contact info@whalesharkredsea.com or call +2 0111 926 898 with your details – we would like to know as much as possible from your whale shark encounter.
- Date/Time
- Size ( estimate against the size of the boat or a snorkeler)
- Behaviour ( how far was the mouth open? )
- GPS position or dive site name
- Any scars or evidence of tagging?
The whale shark is considered “vulnerable to extinction” by the ICUN, but is only protected in a few of the approximately 100 countries it is said to visit - indicating the need for us all to be concerned for the future of this amazing giant of the oceans!

Egypt: How bazaar |
When visiting Egypt, there are ten things you absolutely must do. |
| Feature Article |
 |
|
Continued from last weeks issue. click here to read no 2 of "When visiting Egypt, there are ten things you absolutely must do."
3. Have an Ahwa
Ahwa is the Middle Eastern-style coffee that's very popular throughout Egypt. This thick, strong brew comes in varying degrees of sweetness, and the most popular version is the moderately sweetened mazboot. Men traditionally drink Ahwa, but nowadays it's not uncommon to see women sipping a cup. Ahwa is delicious served with a dried date on the side, and drinking it is typically accompanied by a game of tawla (backgammon), heated political debate or a relaxing sheesha, the traditional water pipe smoked with fruit- or spice-flavoured tobacco.
No. 4 on the list of things you absolutely must do in Egypt will follow next week.

| Royal Angelfish |
| |
| Red Sea marine life |
 |
|
Description & Behavior
There are over 70 different species of Angelfish found in warm ocean waters around much of the world, a few species are from fresh water. Angelfish belong to the family Pomacanthus. These brightly-coloured, flattened body fish live in coral reefs in tropical seas and shallow subtropical waters.
Angelfish reproduce by laying hundreds of eggs at a time. The first gill cover has a spine (pre-opercula) and this can help distinguish Angelfish from the closely-related butterfly fish. Most species of Angelfish are herbivores (plant-eaters).

| A refuge from crowds and strict dress codes in Egypt |
| Featured article |
| EL GOUNA, Egypt: For years, Lamia Khalifa trudged across the sands under Egypt's scorching sun searching for a better life - a better life on the beach, that is. |
 |
|
In her quest for a summer vacation away from other Egyptians, she has gone from the crowded shores of her hometown, Alexandria, to a Mediterranean village ultimately overwhelmed by urban sprawl. Her next refuge was a gated nouveau-riche enclave. Now Khalifa, a retail fashion buyer, has come to El Gouna, a new Red Sea resort with no hordes, no clutter and no hostility toward women who bathe in something less than a full-length robe.
Khalifa's quest reflects the global urge of the well-heeled to set themselves apart from common folk who increasingly have the means to enjoy once-exclusive pleasures. It's an especially intense preoccupation in Egypt, where beaches reflect the country's clash of political, social and religious cultures.
"In Egypt, you are where you swim," says Muhammad Awad, a historian and the director of the Alexandria and Mediterranean Research Center at the Alexandria Library. "To find an exclusive beach is one of the few ways to escape the masses. The problem is, the crowds keep coming."

| Dave the turtle |
6 months after his initial rescue, Dave - the most famous turtle in the Red Sea - sadly died on August 7th. |
| News |
 |
|
A few days before, after collecting many comments from guides and guests on his precarious condition, and also because it had been six months since his initial release, a team organised by the Red Sea Turtle Project, with the kind and important help of Diving Ocean, went out to assess the situation.
Dave was found on the back of Yolanda Reef, completely motionless and brought on the boat for a check up. Dr Patrick Olbrechts, a well-known vet in Sharm, and Dr Eman Aly, zoologist of the Sinai Protectorates Wildlife Unit at the Ras Mohammed National Park, immediately saw Dave's poor conditions.
Dave was suffering general malnutrition (he had lost more than 5 Kg in six months) the plastron was bruised and soft to the touch, when it should be healthy and strong and the tail was bearing a deep and infected cut at the joint with the carapace. Dave was then brought back to the enclosure where he was brought originally when he was first rescued. Immediately the team contacted several sea turtle conservation agencies around the world to obtain scientific protocols to try and rehabilitate Dave.
Unfortunately, he died three days later. An autopsy has been performed by Dr Olbrechts and the results will be divulged as soon as available..

| The Mars hoax |
| Reports Thomas from the Marsa Alam Astronomy centre. |
| News |
 |
|
All these Mars e-mails are simple hoax- mails. For your information: Mars, together with Mercury, Venus and Jupiter are big enough that they are always visible to the naked eye. Sometimes they are nearer to earth so they shine brighter. Sometimes they are in the sky during daytime and therefore obviously not visible. These days Mars rises at 00:25 am in the eastern sky. Jupiter is now the brightest object in the constellation scorpion.
There is a moon eclipse on the 28th, but it happens at 12:35 midday, so it is not visible in Egypt.
Thanks Thomas from everyone at Spot Red Sea who were planning to sit up all night looking for the Marsian Invasion :-)
