Race to save coral reefs from scuba divers |
Red Sea environment |
| What's new |
 |
|
A giant artificial coral reef is being built in the Red Sea in a move to protect natural reefs from destruction - without banning scuba divers.
An estimated 50% to 70% of the Red Sea's reefs have already been destroyed in Israel, Jordan and Egypt.
Divers are the main culprits as they flock to the biodiverse region in large numbers and accidentally knock the coral or create a disturbance with their flippers and diving boats.
Dr Nadav Shashar, a marine biologist at the National Centre for Mariculture, is supervising the pioneering project.
He admitted: "I have well over 1,000 hours underwater and by mistake every once in a while I also break the coral."
Israeli and Jordanian scientists are working together to reverse the destruction of the reefs.
The fruit of their efforts lies a few hundred metres off the coast in the Israeli resort town of Eilat.

| Ismaili filed Al Ahly complaint |
Egypt |
| Sport News |
 |
|
CAIRO: Ismaili have filed a complaint to the Egyptian Football Association, protesting Al Ahly fans' behavior during the 1–1 league draw on Thursday.
"We decided to complain after Al Ahly fans chanted abusive words against Chairman Yehia Al-Koumi during the match," Ismaili spokesman Abdel Rahman Anous told FilGoal.com on Saturday.
"Their spectators also set off fireworks and caused damages in the stands while Ismaili fans perfectly behaved."
Despite Anous' assertion that Ismaili fans kept their demeanor, Al Ahly claimed they have damaged the team's bus after the match.
"Their accusations are untrue," Anous added.
The latest row is likely to intensify the rivalry between both sides, who are indirectly involved in Hosni Abd-Rabou's transfer saga.
Strasbourg insist that they own the midfielder's contract, while Ismaili claim they bought him from the French side.
Al Ahly previously announced that they reached an agreement with Strasbourg that will see Abd-Rabou join the Red Devils.
The case is being investigated by Fifa.

| Red Sea Beaches |
 |
|
For the growing number of those who choose to spend their Red Sea holidays in small downtown hotels or in rented flats or houses which most likely don't have direct access to a beach, there is a number of nice public beaches open all year round. Each week we will present u one of the most popular ones.
Safaga Beach Club
On the south side of Safaga the Safaga Beach Club offers a perfect place for relaxation for holiday makers and residents alike. With the laid back atmosphere, full bar service and restaurant and far away from the hustle bustle of down town Hurghada it is worth the 30 minute drive to visit this haven. Purpose built as a beach club there is no entry fee but there is a minimum charge of LE 50 (spent at the bar/restaurant) and this allows the use of sunbeds, umbrellas and a towel and other facilities including showers and toilets. The snorkeling is fantastic and equipment is available from Emperor Divers who are on site for all snorkelling and diving activities.

20-Minute Kite |
What you will need:
1. 1 sheet of 8 1/2-by-11-inch brightly colored paper
2. Ruler
3. Pencil
4. 3/4-inch masking or clear tape
5. Wire snips
6. Thin bamboo skewer (such as used for kebabs)
7. Plastic surveyor's tape in a bright color
8. Hole punch
9. 10 feet of string (or more, if flying clear of hazards)
10. Small piece of cardboard
How to make it:
1. Fold the sheet of paper in half widthwise. Use a ruler and pencil to measure and draw a diagonal line, as indicated.
Place the ruler against the line and crease the paper along it.
2. Fold back the top layer of paper and tape along the fold line. Trim any excess tape.
3. Using wire snips, trim the bamboo skewer to 8 inches in length. Position the skewer as a brace across the top back of the kite and firmly tape it down.
4. Cut a 6-foot kite tail from the surveyor's tape. Tape it to the rear edge of the kite. Next, flip the kite over and fold the flap (to which you'll tie the string) back and forth until it stands straight up
.
5.
Fold a small piece of tape over the edge of the flap about 3 inches from the top. Punch a hole through the tape 1/4 inch in from the folded edge. Tie one end of the string through the hole.
6. To make a string winder, tie the other end of the string around the middle of the cardboard, securing it with a strip of tape. Wind on the rest of the string, and you're ready to fly!
