Internet will be back to normal within 10 days - but what was the cause?! |
Egypt says Internet back to normal in 10 days |
| News |
 |
|
Internet services in Egypt will not be restored to normal for at least 10 days after two undersea cables were cut earlier this week, causing severe disruptions, the telecommunications ministry said on Saturday.
The cable cuts near Egypt disrupted Web access in parts of the Middle East and Asia.
The ministry said it expected work to repair the cables in the Mediterranean Sea to start on Tuesday and take several days.
"Thus, the disorder in the Internet network would continue for a period that may not be less than 10 days," it said in a statement.
Egypt said about 55 percent of its Internet capacity had been restored. "This is expected to increase gradually," the statement added... Read more
Ships did not cut internet cable
No ships were present when two marine cables carrying much of the Middle East's internet traffic were severed, Egypt's Ministry of Communications has said, contrary to earlier speculation about the causes of the cut.
The ministry had originally stated that a ship dropping its anchor on the two key cables was most likely responsible for Wednesday's cut in service that robbed Egypt, Saudi Arabia and India of most of their internet connections.
"A marine transport committee investigated the traffic of ships in the area, 12 hours before and after the malfunction, where the cables are located to figure out the possibility of being cut by a passing vessel and found out there were no passing ships at that time," said the statement... Sports: Egypt at full strength for first time |
| News |
 |
|
Egypt will have a full-strength squad available for the first time when they continue the defence of their African Nations Cup title against Angola at the quarter-final stage in Kumasi on Monday.
Egypt coach Hassan Shehata has the pleasant dilemma of choosing among several options now that midfielder Mohamed Aboutrika has returned to full fitness.
Aboutrika has been used as a substitute in previous matches, coming on with a positive impact as Egypt finished top of Group C after their first three matches in Kumasi.
But Shehata will be hard-pressed to accommodate the Al Ahli player after the success of his midfield in the matches against Cameroon, Sudan and Zambia.
However, it is in defence that the coach is most concerned as Egypt come up against a highly-rated Angola attack.
"I wasn't happy with the defence, we need to work hard before the quarter-final," he told reporters this week.
Mohamed Zidan is expected to return in a three-man attack after being a substitute in Wednesday's 1-1 draw with Zambia.

Expert Warns of Danger to Marine Life |
Red Sea Environment |
| News |
 |
|
Dr. Abdul Mohsen Al-Sufyani, a Saudi oceanographer, warned against the negative impact of undersea communication cables on marine life in Red Sea, adding that the cable could change marine atmosphere along red Sea coasts.
Sufyani is a member of a committee that has consulted with FLAG Telecom, the world’s largest undersea cable operator responsible for a majority of the world’s undersea telecommunications infrastructure on matters related to laying cable within Saudi territorial waters.
The committee has recommended that the so-called Fiberoptic Link Around the Globe (FLAG) be buried under the seabed.

Aswan
The town Aswan (ancient Greek Syene) in Upper Egypt, celebrated for its cleanliness, lies in latitude 24° 5 north below the First Cataract. Situated on the east bank of the Nile, partly on low ground and partly on a hill, it is a much favored winter resort thanks to its equable dry and warm climate and its sand baths, which are efficacious in the treatment of diseases of the joints. Aswan, the
capital of Egypt's most southerly governorate and the terminus of the railroad line along the Nile Valley, has a university which is still in course of development. As a result of the construction of the High Dam farther up the valley Aswan is now becoming one of the country's principal industrial centers (steel, nitrogen, electric power).
At Aswan the Nile divides into several arms, separated by large granite rocks and islands, in particular the island of Elephantine. There is only a narrow strip of cultivable land, supporting almost nothing but date-palms; the dates produced here are considered the best in Egypt. The Southern Cross constellation is visible here in January about 3 a.m., in April about 10 p.m.
